Eddy-induced meridional transport variability at ocean western boundary

چکیده
Meridional transport variability induced by westward-propagating eddies impinging on the western boundary is investigated both analytically and numerically. A simple theory first developed in framework of reduced-gravity model which relates eddy-induced meridional to eddy thickness anomalies propagated into long Rossby waves, this followed a suite numerical experiments. It found that excite waves propagate equatorward along boundary, leads coherent overturning circulation (MOC) incident field. The magnitude duration MOC are variable irregular, ranging from less than 1 Sv over 5 10 days 100 days. Importantly, these lead considerable heat across latitudes, with implications for seasonal interannual climate prediction. • at ocean boundary. Eddies significant anomalies. These variability.

Mass and volume transport variability in an eddy-filled ocean
The possibility that the oceanic general circulation is undergoing changes as part, or the cause, of major climate shifts is being intensely discussed, with some published results relying on data from moorings spanning the North Atlantic Ocean. The circulation is, however, extremely noisy. Here, I use existing estimates of the frequency and wavenumber content of geostrophic eddies in the ocean ...
متن کاملAttribution of Deep Western Boundary Current variability at 26.51N
Observed variations in the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) at 26.51N, which carries the deep limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC), have been shown to greatly exceed in magnitude the variations of the overall basin-wide MOC, with strong variability at a range of time scales from weeks to multiple-months. Attribution of these strong DWBC variations will be crucial fo...
متن کاملEnhanced Particulate Organic Carbon Export at Eddy Edges in the Oligotrophic Western North Pacific Ocean
Mesoscale eddies in the subtropical oligotrophic ocean are ubiquitous and play an important role in nutrient supply and oceanic primary production. However, it is still unclear whether these mesoscale eddies can efficiently transfer CO2 from the atmosphere to deep waters via biological pump because of the sampling difficulty due to their transient nature. In 2007, particulate organic carbon (PO...
متن کاملEddy-Induced Instability for Low-Frequency Variability
Synoptic eddy–mean flow interaction has been recognized as one of the key sources for extratropical lowfrequency variability. In this paper, the underlying dynamics of this interaction are examined from the perspective of a synoptic eddy-induced dynamic instability. To delineate this instability, a barotropic model is used that is linearized with respect to a stochastic basic flow prescribed wi...
متن کاملA Further Investigation of the Recharge Oscillator Paradigm for ENSO Using a Simple Coupled Model with the Zonal Mean and Eddy Separated
The recharge oscillator paradigm for ENSO is further investigated by using a simple coupled model, which externally includes the equatorial wave dynamics represented by the Kelvin and gravest symmetric Rossby waves. To investigate the role of eddies in the Pacific basin–wide adjustment to the wind forcing, particularly at the western and eastern boundaries, the zonal mean and eddy parts are tre...
